I have tried a lot of different short tows - cows tails to a ring on my waist belt long tow, double carabiners on webbing with a quick release, the gordon brown solution etc.... Never very happy although all were manageable but quick release systems seemed a weakness - snap shackles not great unless connected to something solid, overlap cams on webbing open under sudden load etc.. Then was shown a very neat little quick release mechanism on a kitesurf rig which was easy to use and reliable as a basis for a tow.
