AS3 Treshnish Puffin Magic - 22-26th May 2021
Aims -
- This is a classic 5 day wild camping & nature observing sea kayaking trip out on the western borders & islands around Mull.
- We'll aim to camp four nights away - ideally out on Lunga in the Treshnish chain, on the south shore of Gometra, further south on Iona, or elsewhere remote. We'll aim to keep paddling days around the 20- 25km mark so that we have time to spend at our camp locations to observe, photograph & draw wildlife and the other magnificent scenery and historical artifacts of this location.
- At this time of year we will witness abundant nesting seabird colonies, and we should see puffins, guillemots, razorbills, shags, kittiwakes, fulmars, skua & maybe even storm petrels & manx shearwaters....
- In addition there is a good chance we will sea white tailed sea eagles, otters and various cetaceans including porpoises, maybe dolphins and even whales & basking sharks and of course lots of harbour & grey seals
Who will this event suit?
- This event is a grade C trip for experienced sea paddlers in an area with significant potential weather & swell exposure. As a result, sea conditions can become challenging, but the flip side is that this is a magical environment for the paddler looking to witness majestic coastal rock formations and abundant sea bird populations. The exposure to weather may also require us to modify our plans, but there are a number of alternatives with shelter from various directions around Mull.
- Participants should have experience camping from their sea kayaks. In terms of weather we may face extremes on the west coast of Scotland at this time of year. Daytime temperatures can range between 5-14°C. Night-time can be down to freezing. There is some rain, but this is the driest sunniest periods for this region. Sea water temperature will be cold – around 11-13°C. It can also be beautifully sunny and clear. Your paddling, camping, land clothing and temperament need to be able to cope whichever way it goes!
- You can find details of our event grading system here.
Logistics
- We will meet on Mull & launch from a site appropriate to the weather, leaving our vehicles for the three nights away. You need to organise the ferry crossing from Oban to Craignure on Mull sometime on the 21st., and on that evening we will probably camp at the site on the shore of Loch Na Keal. I will have space to transport up to three individuals and boats on my van & trailer, so that may allow us to leave some vehicles in Oban, or even further south if it suits.
Numbers
- Maximum participants 6.
Price
- The price for the five day trip is £500.
